Lead by pianist Mike Effenberger, Weird Turn Pro includes Chris Klaxton/tp, Chris gagne/tb, Matt Langley/bcl/ss, Rob Gerry/b and Mike Walsh/dr on this collection of originals. The colors are dominated by soft pastels, as the rhythm team trudges through “Or Els The Self Most Mine” lead by the rich sonorities by Langley’s bass clarinet, and the spaciously visceral “Void No. 1.” Dreamy landscapes on “Nor Be Dismayed” and sighing restraint on the title tune are reminiscent of vintage Gil Evans, with muted horns and restrained swing, while the horns sigh over Gerry’s bowed bass on the traditional melody of “Finlandia.” Long shadowed sunsets are in abundance here.
