Pastoral moods are created by leader Stefan Bauer as he plays marimbas and vibes with a lithe tam of tammy Scheffer/voc, Chris Bacas/ss-ts, Jim Vivian/b and Greg Ritchie/dr. Scheffer’s voice harkens to Luciana Souza in terms of dreamy softness, whether wordless on the ethereal rubato of “Gimli” or the more troubadour’d when she sings in English with marimbas on “In the Town of Springhill, Novia Scotia” or the oblique “First Snow.” Edgy meldings of soprano sax and voice create prismatic colors on an edgy “Echoes” and “Some Other Time” while the team gets deep and wild on an exotic stampede of Duke Ellington’s “Caravan.” Baur’s presence is felt as an addition of color to this autumnal collection of hues.
