Spottiswoode plays guitar and harmonica while singing in a vintage Randy Newman style with a core team of Joyn Young/b, Time Vaill/dr, candace DeBartolo/ts, Kevin Cordt/tp, Riley McMahon/g, Tony Lauria/key and guests on strings or horns. His wry delivery tells stories with authority on pieces like the latin “Goodbye Jim McBride,” with a New Orleans lilt during “You’ll See” with rich strings in support on “Hoboken.” He creates an Old World charm with Paganini violins for “The Walk of Shame” and gets hectic on the hard bopper “Love Saxophone.’ With Cordt’s warm horn, he is rich on the ballad “East Village Melody” and closes out the album on a spacious aria for “I Don’t Regret.” Lots of different moods and colors. A clever journey.
