Alto madness master Richie Cole gives a fitting tribute to the soulful Cannonball Adderley as he brings in hard bop icon trombonist Reggie Watkins along with a core team of Kevin Moore/p, Eric Susoef/g, Mark Perna/b, Vince Taglieri/dr, JD Chaisson/tp, Rik Matt/ts and a handful of guests. Cole’s salute ranges from note for note repetition of Adderley’s solos as on “Toy” to re-arranging the pieces such as a straight-ahead swinger of “Mercy Mercy Mercy.” Soulful takes of classics such as “Dat Dere,” boppy “Jeannine,” infectious “Jive Samba” and the hard hitting “Sack of Woe” are juxtaposed more obscure pieces such as “Stars Fell On Alabama” from Adderley’s string album. A couple takes of “Save Your Love For Me” included lyrics in English and Portuguese, with Cole writing his own tribute on a bluesy “Bell of the Ball.” Cannonball is rolling on this one.
