The compositions of the recently departed genius Carla Bley are interpreted by the trio of Iro Haarla/p, Ulf Krokfors/b and Barry Altschul/dr on this celebratory release. The trio gives a bit of a Thelonious Monk puree on a number of the tracks, with a bouncy bop on “Start”, the drums skipping on “Batterie” and contemplative spaces for “Closer.” The trio undulates gloriously for “And Now, The Queen,” with some gentle drum work on the thoughtful read of “Ida Lupino.” Krokfors bass leads well into “Vashkar” and the team is reverent as they resonate on “Jesus Maria.” Respectful, but not imitative of an important voice.
