At four score and two, pianist and band leader Eddie Palmieri is still the master of creating exciting Latin jazz. This latest album has him with a muscular big band that includes guest vocalists Gilberto Santa Rosa and Herman Olivera, and even features a guest guitar appearance by Carlos Santana. Of the latter, the minor modal “Mi Congo” has Santana sear through the rich sax work like a machete, showing a mix of traditional pulses and ultra modern grooves. Palmieri himself sizzles with the percussion on “Mi Luz Mayor” and is lyrical along with Santa Rosa for “Sun Sun Bzabae’/” Some fun salsa is deliverd by Olivera on “Wuimbobo” and the bright and upbeat Abarriba Cumiaremos,” complete with chorus enforcement, while he saunters on ”Tremendo Cumban.” Lush horns are heard on “Sonando Con Puerto Rico” while Sana Rosa gives an aria on “Que Falta Tu Me Haces.” This set is made for Saturday Night cruising!
