Doug Deming & The Jewel Tones: Complicated Mess

Doug Deming has a rough and rootsy voice as he plays guitar alongside Andrew Gohman/b, Marty Dodson/dr, a sax team of “Sax” Gorddron & Tino Barker, Bob Welsh/p, Chris Codish/org and among guests harmonica huffers Madison Slim and Kim Wilson.

You get some 50s rock licks on the title track, stark Link Wray echoes for “Sweet Poison” and some hip Chet Atkins picking and grinning for “Captain’s Quarters. “ Some fun R&B saxing on “Someday Pretty Baby” and “Just a Moment of Your Time” are nice and sweaty, and they team up with some hi hat work to get you into a Louis Jordan jumping mood on “Rat Killin.” This guy knows how to swing, and his street smarts show with some fuzzy Chicago moods on “Need My Baby.” Downtown grit.
