Composer and violinist Jason Kao Hwang leads an 8 member band that combines jazz and traditional instrumentation on this five song suite that is continuous in its delivery. The song titles such as “Breath Within the Bomb,” “Surge Part 1 & 2”, “Evolution” and “Declarations” have not gaps, segueing into one another. Deep subtones by tuba from Joseph Daely get fisceral on “Breath” and folksy strings team with chirping brass and bowing bass for “Surge.” Asian fragrances and harmonies make for gentle moods on “Declarations” with the rhythm getting most aggressive on “Evolution.” Lots of freedom and intuitive musings.
