Sam Broverman: A Jewish Boy’s Christmas, Maria Shafer & Shane Savala: Christmas in the City

Two interesting carolers for the Advent Season…

It’s ironic that Sam Broverman would think that Christmas and Judaism are incongruous, since Jesus himself was Jewish, but that’s another topic for another time. He writes some clever material her, such as a whimsical “What’s A Jew to Do on Christmas” and the fun”You’r eSpeaking Yiddish” which includes Drew Jurecka’s warm clarinet. He gets a bit irreverent on “Christmas Carol Paridies” and  PDQ Bachish on “The First Noel Parody,” with Tom Wait’s “Christmas Carol From a Hooker in Minneapolis” sung by Whitney Ross-Barris” making the season to be sassy. A dreidel of a December.

The teaming of vocalist Maria Schafer and guitarist Shane Savala mix some originals with secular Christmas themes. They do a folksy read of John Lennon and  Yoko Ono’s “Happy Xmas (War is Over” and are cozy for “What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve?”. The originals “Shape Your  Light” and “Brings Me Back” are fresh and gently swinging, with warm strums provided by Savala in support of Schafer’s confident deliver. Only seven songs, but a nice stocking stuffer.
