Darryl Holter plays acoustic guitar and sings with two different bands, a “Roots” band that takes you to Nashville with Greg Leisz/steelg, Todd Sickafoose/b, Gabe Witcher/v-p-g and Don Heffington/dr, and a “Branches” band including Jebin Bruni/p-key, Tim Young/eg, Kaveh Rastegar/eb and Aaron Sterling/dr that rocks it out a bit.
With the Roots band, you’re taken to the Moose Lodge with earnest vocals and dance stepping pieces like “Blind Man Blues” with guest singer Shayna Steele” and a twangy upbeat “Walk A Mile” while
“Crazy For You” is a two stepping delight. Rockier material includes “Welcome to the New Depression,” a shadowy “King of the Hill,” a dramatic “Words” with Chris Morrissey” and a dirge-like “Once” with Anais Mitchell.” Sort of a gumbo of The Band meeting with Hoyt Axton.
