Playing piano and Fender Rhodes, Alex Clough brings together David Smith/tp-fh, Steve Kortyka/ts, John Tate/b and Jay Sawyer/dr through some vintage Blue Note hard and post bop sounds. On piano, the team shows some nimble pulses with a hip front line on “ Swirl” and Kortyka gives off a big sound on a bluesy “ Marseilles” with Smith squealing on a delightfully pulsed “Leaps and Bounds.” A few trio outings mix slick brush work on “Shore Road” and some mellow flowing during “Free, Free, Free.” With Clough on keyboards, things get soulful on “Red Shades.” This will fit well with vintage Riverside, Prestige and Blue Note albums on your iphone.
