Composer and arranger Jamie Lawrence puts together an all star team that mixes and matches on this impressive album. High rollers like Marty Ehrlich/cl-as, Peter Erskine/dr, Eddie Daniels/ts, Jon Faddis/tp and Jim Pugh/tb accompany Lawrence on piano and synths for these well crafted mixes of melody and innovation. The 21 minute “New York Suite” is a Mingusy affair that mixes drifting thoughts with shifting meters while Ehrilich, Pugh and JD Parran/ts-cl-acl tug back and forth while Ed Bielek delivers some rich harmonica work. Lawrence Feldman’s alto sax floats on the sweet “Margot with a ‘t’” while the team shuffles to Lawrence’s piano on “Watts What.” A hip little Caribbean “Tongue Twister” features Francisco Ceneno’s bouncing electric bass along with Faddis’ fragrant horn. Lots to like here.
