Pianist Ran Blake teams up with adventurous vocalist Christine Correa for an intriguing selection of tunes. Blake goes solo on a few renditions of George Russell’s famed “Stratusphunk” in which he uses his rich touch to create long moonlit shadows. Correa uses her voice in a variety of ways. Always clearly enunciating, she gives a harrowing and eerie read of “Don’t Explain” while playing the bohemian hipster on “Bebopper” and “All About Ronnie>” She mixes growls and cantoral cries on the Sephardic “Ah, El Novio No Quere Dinero” and gets visceral on Ivan Lins’ “Love Dance.” Most provocative is her opening searing cry on a gripping take of Ornette Coleman’s “Lonely Woman” after a clear and luminous teaming with Blake on “ Out of This World.” This lady knows how to put feeling into creating a mood. A Dickens novel of images.
