Laurie Jane & The 45s: Late Last Night

Street-wise vocalist Laurie Jane and her mates Cort Duggins/g-p, Jason Embry/b and Scott Dugdale/dr team up with a horn section of Brian Hogg and Eric Snyder along with guitarist “Screamin’ John Hawkins” for a rural trip to the back roads of juke joints. A handful of the songs are recorded to make them feel like scratchy ol’ 78s, with tinny piano tones for “Atlanta” “T’Ain’t Nobody’s Bus’ness If I Do” and a “Strange Lovin’” with some nasty slide guitar work. On the more modern recorded material, Dugins growls with horns on a soulful “Achin’ Hearted” and stomps to the vintage R&Ber “Late Last Night” while some fuzzy guitar echoes on the rocking tribute “Joe Turner” and some Western Swing thrills on ”Can’t Find Nobody to Do Like My Daddy.” Two dashes of nostalgia and one of grit on this thick gumbo.
