Joel Harrison gets folksy as he plays guitar, dobro, six string banjo, national steel guitar and even sings a bit on this mix of jazz and Cumberland gap with a core team of David Binney/as, Jon Cowherd/key-p, Uri Caine/p-key, Chris Tordini-Stephan Crump/b, Brian Blade-Allison Miller/dr and a collection of guests on strings, percussion, voice and guitar including “Nels Cline and Christian Howes.
Haunting and almost abstract moods float on these pieces of Americana, suc as “America The Beautifuyl” and a bluesy yet rural “900 Miles.” Binney sounds back porch country on “My Epitaph” and lovely on a wondrous take of “Wichita Lineman.” The team gets funky on “Lost Indian” and stomps like Bob Wills on an “ah ha”-ing “Osage Stomp” with even a Johnny Cash tune getting a chance on a hard hitting “Ring of Fire.” Great ideas and moods abound.
