The flexible trio of Andrew Raffo Dewar/ss, John Hughes/b and Chad Popple/dr-perc-vib do themes and variations with plenty of improvisations. Three “Reflejo” tunes include a wind chimey “I” with ringing vibes, a herky jerky “II” and a bowed bass and harmonically sublime “III.” Four “Improvisations” include edgy rattles on “4,” plucked bass bouncing around on “3” and fluttering reeds on “1”. While the melodies are simple and direct, the treatments of the themes keep the ears attentive, making the journey intriguing. Spontaneous without combusting.
