Thick toned saxist Rob Dixon teams up with legendary drummer Mike Clark, 7-stringed guitarist and producer Charlie Hunter and trombonist Ernest Stuart for a spacious and starkly swinging album. Sans bassist, the band is still able to lay out a funky groove, which makes sense since Clark pioneered the genre, and the team lays out a hip riff on “Yo” and gets into a Fabulous Flame mindset on “San Leandro” and “Nag Champa.” Some hip shufflework gives Dixon a chance to blow smoke on a bluesy “California Love” while his ballad with Hunter on “Wishing Well” is luminous. No clutter here, just a nice collection of ribs with the meat falling off.
