Sometimes jazz is an attitude, looking for experimentation of ideas and sounds. Here are a couple examples
The mix of Neil Welches sax and live electronics with Christopher Icasiano’s drums make for an intuitive mix of landscapes and colors on this collaboration. Icasiano supplies drum patters while Welch gives spacey tones and echoes on “Four” while the drummer gets kinetic and loose for Welch on “Capital.” The two sound apocalyptic as they hit the hardest on “Bends” and get frantic on a cataclysmic “R.B.G.” Lots of atmospheres and dark clouds hovering in the sky, waiting for the lighting to strike.
Phil Scarff plays soprano sax and teams up with tabla master Bhushan Parchur for a mix of re-arranged traditional pieces as well as new compositions. Of the former, the two gallop along on “Raga Yaman” and methodically ramble along during “raga Puriya dhanashiri.” The two actually sound a bit beboppy during the two part “Raga Rageshri” and the lyrics on “Raga Yaman, Drut Tintaal” evokes exotic moods of South Asia. Mystical and accessible.
