Alto saxist and composer Miguel Zenon continues his delving into the music of his heritage, yet this time around teams his alto sax with the Spektral Quartet, featuring Clara Lyon/vi, Maeve Feinberg/vi, Doyle Armbrust/va and Russell Rolen/cel. Zenon wisely uses his alto sax to integrate, and not dominate, the proceedings, melding in his warm alto either on gracious pizzicato’s as on “Rosario” or on Bartok like bows during “Cadenas.” The strings create long shadows to portray sepia panoramas on “Cadenza” while Rolen’s deep plucks are resonant while contrasted with short strokes and Zenon’s blends on “Villalbeno” and the dreamy “Viejo.” Zenon’s alto sometimes joins in with the strings as an extra texture, while sometimes breaking out of the pack as on the Bach-like “Yumac.” All the while, the mood is of an Old World parlor, with genteel manners teaming with rich traditional voices of the past. Excellent!
