Endorsed by no less than Buddy Guy as “one of the people who will keep the blues alive,” JW Jones is recorded “live” with his rollicking band of Laura Greenberg/b, Will Laurin/dr and Don Cummings/B3. Jones has a rough and ready 70s guitar sound while his tenor’d voice is almost like the guy next door in earnestness. The team has a bluesy swagger as the shuffle along on”Need You So Bad” and both ax and singer snarl through “Moanin’ At Midnight.” Some Memphis stew is stirred on a swampy “Catch That Tear Drop” while Jones moans and picks on a rolling folky of “You’re Gonna Miss Me.” Cummings creates a thick haze as he mixes with the heavy metal sounds of “I Don’t Believe A Word You Say” and boogies hard on “Way Down Inside.” The closer is an opus of a medley that has the band running through songs ranging from The Ventures’ “Walk Don’t Run” to “Secret Agent Man” and various “instrumental group” hits like “Misirlou” and “Pipeline” before rounding out the evening with the guitar ringin’ a bell on “Johnny B. Goode.” Not a bad way to spend a blue interlude!
