Ernesto Cervini’s Turboprop: Abundance

Unlike some  politicians, drummer Ernesto Cervini leads well from behind on this album of originals and standards. He brings into the fold the impressive  post bop team of Tara Davidson/as-ss-fl, Joel Frahm/ts, William Carn/tb, Adrean Farrugia/p and Dan Loomis/b. Cervini shows impressive stick work on the tricky “The Queen” which includes urgent bass lines and assertive alto work, while the bopping standard “Tadd’s Delight” has the leader brushing the horn section to kinetic climaxes. The rhythm section produces a strong caner for a mix of flute and horns on “Abundant Overture” and the horns float like cirrus clouds over Cervinit’s fluffy rice pilaf on ”Gramps.” Carn’s lovley horn skips over the cymbals on a cheerful “Smile” and a baroque “My Shining Hour” includes warm embers from Davidson and Carn.” Optimistic sounds abound.
