As they say in the liner notes, this band is “rocked out seriously funky jaw dropping ear candy.” How that plays out with the team of Lisa Dodd belting out vocals with Ryan Davidson/g, Eric Gunnison/key, Stockton Helbing/dr, Gerald Stockton/b and a four piece horn section mixing vintage soul fests with originals that sway like a 21st Century Average White Band.
Classic tunes like Rare Earth’s “I Just Want to Celebrate” Bill Withers’ “Use Me” and Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition”have a sweaty swamp feel with thick saxes creating a smoky mist, while Dodd gets sultry with Gunnison on a sensuous read of Paul McCartney’s “My Love.” Frank David Greene’s trumpet glows with bel canto emotion on a bluesy “Pay For It.” While the staccato brass team gives a spacey feel to “Billions” and the reeds mix with synthesizers for a dreamy drama “One Song.” This team is filled with grit, and makes enough grease to make any wheel stop squeaking.
