The Denny Seiwell Trio: Boomerang

Drummer Denny Seiwell teams up with Angelenos John Chiodini/g and Joe Bagg/key for an organ trio date that mixes vintage sounds with fresh tonalities. The team shows its bebop bonafides with some hot Parker-like unison lines on “Cheetahs & Gazelles” with Seiwell hitting the high hat on “April Child.” Bagg creates some blues grooves for Chiodini’s lithe solos on “Amber” and the boogie-ing “Muster the Gumption” and creates an ethereal opening before giving the band the signal to slide into third on a shuffling take of Seiwell’s boss Paul McCartney’s “Live and Let Die.” Some thoughtful brush strokes set the tone for a churchy organ on a meditative “I Fall in Love Too Easily” before hitting the sticks with a back beat burner of “Big Mama” and hitting the ride cymbal like Walter Brennan on shotgun for “Cascades of the 7 Waterfalls.” A full meal of soul food.
