Sam Bevan: Emergence

Bassist and composer Sam Bevans creates rich harmonic panoramas on this album with a core team of Eric Garland/dr, Kasey Knusden/as and Cory Wright/as, and brings along guests Ian Carey-Henry Hung/tp, Patrick Cress/bs-bcl, James maone/ts, donna Viscuso/fl and Jackie Rago/per for extra texture. The horns deliver blue hues on a swinging hip hopper of “H &A” wit rich alto sax soloing by Knusden” and some post bop atmospheres prevail with Wright’s tenor solos on “Blues For CM” and the muscular “Sleepless in Suresnes.” Reeds weave in and out in a clever fashion on “Epicureans” and the sections mourn on “Nellowee’s Waltz” but the team shows it can get funky in a deep pocket as garland and Bevan dig with their shovels on “Parallel Falcon.” Modern moods and voices still harken to vintage ideas.
