J.C. Hopkins: It’s a Sad and Beautiful World

Earth toned vocalist/pianist JC Hopkins mixes moods with the sardonic wit of a Randy Newman and the American trad feel of The Band on this collection of originals. It makes sense that Band charter members Levon Helms/dr and Garth Hudson/B3 are found here, as with Catherine Popper/b and Teddy Thompson/g the sound like modern Big Pink on the rough and ready “Upside Down” the wistful “Big Sister” and rootsy “Walking Cane.” With Victor Lewis/dr, Seamus Blake/ts and James Zollar/tp, the moods get into jazz noir on “Us Versus Them” and singer/songwriter 70s during “Just That Way.” A lot of Moondog Matinee is felt in this late night delight.
