Al Muirhead’s Canadian Quintet: Undertones

Except for Cy Touff, you’re not going to get many people to make a list out of bass trumpet players. Al Muirhead works on topping that list with an impressive outing with Kelly Jefferson/ts, Reg Schwager/g, Neil Swainson/b and Ted Warren/dr through a mix of jazz standards and originals. The team swings with delight on a richly textured take of “Four Brothers” and gallops with Schwager in the lead on “Charade.” Muirhead’s horn is a bit like a light trombone, delivering a bel canto “I Don’t Stand a Ghost of a Chance With You” and cozy on “S’posin.” The horns meld well with Jefferson getting a chance to shine on “A Tue For Cal” and the rhythm team shuffles with style for the horns on the leader’s “Takin’ It To The Bank, Tom.” Get this guy an LA gig!
