Jure Pukl: Doubtless

Jure Pukl is one of those artists that make you wonder if he would be more renowned if he weren’t stationed in Europe. The tenor saxist has a rich and palpable sound, getting thick and molten at times, but still able to walk the tightrope of bop to post bop. He forms a two tenor quartet with Melissa Aldana/ts, Joe Sanders/b and Gregory Hutchinson/dr for some evocative originals. The melding of saxes works well, like syrup and molasses, as they create a fluffy froth on the spaciously swinging “Doubtless” Pukl gives Aldana a couple of songs off, creating visceral subtones on “Compassion” and weaving around Sanders on “Where Are You Coming From” allowing the rich sounds to float like cigar smoke. Rewards abound here.
