Bassist and composer Erik Applegate creates a variety of trios on a mix and match system a collection of friends. Brian Horton/ts, Jim White/dr, Greg Gisbert/tp, Dana Landry/p, Steve Kovalcheck/g, Kenyon Brenner/ts, Julia Dollison/voc and Julian Carey/voc are cut and pasted together as threesomes on the collection of originals. A dash of 50s “Town Without Pity” has Kovalcheck’s fuzzy guitar in B movie mood, while Queen’s “We Will Rock You” has strong thunder coming from the hills. Flugelhorn and tenor sax create an elegant harmony on “Eastside, Four-thirty-five” with Brian Horton’s tenor teaming with warm bass work for a serene “The Good Life.” Indie voiced Dollison is upbeat on the soft “I Was Never Blue” while Carey is soulful with some synths during “Nobody’s Fault But Mine.” While there is no overall musical mood, the temperament is in strong form, one of cooperation and conversation.
