Jazz icon Dave Liebman teams up with Drew Gress/b and Phil Haynes/dr for eight originals that range from mystical world to free range post bop. Liebman brings an arsenal of woodwinds, creating Monument Valley atmosphere’s with his wooden flute on whirling around Gress’s bass on the spacious “El-Smoke” while his whistle gives exotic laminations during “Spring Theory.” Haynes and Gress get frisky and creates sparks on an “Interlude” before Liebman jumps in with his soprano for a muscular “Shramba” while the team is loose with extrapolations on “Whack Whap.” Liebman breathes out romance on the spacious “Joy,” while his rich tenor is palpable as the team swoons on the rich “Blue Dop.” Working well without a net.
