The lead vocals provided by the earthy Cathy Lemons and street wise Phil Berkowitz create a juke joint atmosphere on this rootsy album with Ian Lamson/g, Chris Burns/key, Endre Tarczy/b, Robi Bean/dr and a collection of guests including Kid Anderson/g-perc-etc. The band gets nice and swampy as Lemons takes you to Memphis for a dry rib rub of “Take the Long Road” and a gospel-grooved “The River” with accompanying harp by Berkowitz.” She gets cozy with Burns’ piano on the cabaret mooded “You Left It Behind” while ominous and eerie during “Last Ride.” For his part, Berkowitz is murky with the organ on “Alligator Baptism” and serves as an excellent partner on duets like the funky “Don’t Take Too Much” and the country twanger “Make a Right Turn.” Lots of foot stomping on this one.
