Guitarist/composer Noshir Mody brings together Hankle/tp-fh, Campbell Charshee/p, John Lenis/b and Yutaka Uchida/dr on 6 pieces that stretch out in mood and themes. Mody’s guitar has a John Scofield-sounding tension to it, working well with the loose horns as Mullan’s alto and Hankles horn flow on “Secrets in the Wood and Stone” and the impressionistically blues of “Precipice of Courage” with hand drums adding Third World texture. Mody does some work with the pedals on a subliminal conversations with Mullan’s tenor on “ Reconciling Loss.” Uchida’s delicate cymbals turn to assertive drums along with Charshee’s piano on “Weaving Our Future From Our Past” before Lenis’ bass leads the way for the thoughtful “Forever July.” Everyone gets a chance in the spotlight, with each tune ranging between just under 10 minutes to over 15. Much of the time, the songs feel like musical guideposts to higher paths.
