Manuel Valera  Trio: The Planets

No, it’s not a jazz version of Holst’s famous opus, this is a piece commissioned by the Chamber Music America/Doris Duke 2017 New Jazz Works  Program. The team of pianist Valera with Hans Glawischnig/b and EJ Strickland/dr ranges from a sparks flying Latin driver “Earth” to a loping cadence of “Sun  Prelude III” to pulsating modal pieces such as “ Mercury” and a dark drama Sun Prelude II” with Strickland caressing the cymbals as he coaxes the team on a  bluesy “Uranus.”  Glawischnig’s bass creates some dark hues on “Saturn” and brings a bop solo to the post-modern “Mars” while Malera is nocturnal on”Venus” and shadowed on ”Intro to Earth.” A couple of bonus tracks include a fluid “Llora” and a graceful “Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters” which have the three providing excellent communication.
