Drummer Jemal Ramirez creates a variety of grooves on the seamless album with Warren Wolf/vib-mar, Howard Wiley/ss-as-ts, Mile Olmos/tp, Matthew Clark/p-key and John Shifflett/b. His touch and drive is nimble, dancing and galloping with the assertive horns on pieces such as Freddie Hubbard’s “Latin” or the boppy and crisp “Youthful Bliss.” Wolff’s vibes get bluesy with some soulful keyboards and Wiley’s tenor on “Don’t Shoot the Messenger” and the team sizzles with assertiveness with Olmos and Wiley on alto on a searing take of “Speak Low.” Ramirez gets the team into a mysterious mood with some exotic tympanies during “A Long Way Home” while the vibes are bluesy and breezy on “Save Your Love For Me.” Ramirez drums up business on this fingersnapping session.
