Spontaneous compositions…
Bassists Barre Philips and Motoharu Yoshizawa team up for two long improvised conversations. The first one is a gently drawn out and undulating mix of quietude building up into a climax. The second piece includes soft bowing, rustling strings as percussion and scratchy sand paper effects. The dynamics change and the rapport is strong, although the looseness and range can be a bit of an endurance tester.
For five songs ranging around a quarter hour (except for the final solo), Kang Tae Hwan uses his alto sax for fuzzy subtones, slithering wails and sighs on the first piece, squeals and gasps on the meditative second, huffs and puffs for the third and closes out with groans and wails with repetitive riffs on the finale. A marathon for both performer and audience!
