Guitarist Charlie Ballantine delivers a clever tribute to Bob Dylan, right up to the CBS-vintage 60s styled cover that brings it all back home to the plugged in days of Mr. Zimmerman. He joins together with a core of Jesse Wittman/b and Chris Parker and adds cameos by Amanda Gardier/as, Rob Dixon/ts, Shawn Mcgowan/org, Brandon Whyde/g and Mina Keohane/voc and uses his strings and pedals in a style not dissimilar to Bill Frisell on pieces like the methodical and plaintive “Time They Are A-Changin,” “A Hard Rain’s A-Gonna Fall” and “One More Cup of Coffee.” Ballantine gets a bit Dick Dale-ish on the twangy “The Death of Emmett Till” and with Dixon’s sighing tenor is nightclubby on “Masters of War” while Wittman’s bass allows for some personal moments during “The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll.” A folksy “Don’t Think Twice” features a gruff Brandon Whyde” and Mina Keohane teams with him for a Cumberland Gap mooded “I Shall Be Released.” Impressive tribute with rich ambiance.
