Benjamin Boone/Phillip Levine: The Poetry of Jazz

Poetry is delivered in a variety of bohemian settings as saxist Benjamin Boone teams up with a rotating rhythm team as well as guests on this clever and Beat Generation session of the 21st Century. Craig Von Berg contributes Vince Guaraldi-styled piano for “Making Light of It” while cool bop tones are formed for Levine on “Gin.” Chris  Potter brings his warm tenor for some bop flavored narration on the sleek “The Unknowable” with Branford Marsalis giving hints of John Coltrane on a modal tribute of “Soloing.” Edgy Mingus moods are formed on “A Dozen Dawn Songs, Plus One” and Greg Osby is reflective with his alto for Levine on “Call It Music.” Tom Harrell’s autumnal trumpet floats as Levine brings poetry to Benny Golson’s “I Remember Clifford” and Boone himself adds nourish alto for “What Work Is.” The modern Greenwich Village and  Left Bank of jazz.
