Cy Coleman is probably best known for his Broadway composing skills, with songs such as “Witchcraft” and “The Best is Yet to Come” part of the jazz canon. He was also a capable jazz pianist, and this nifty little disc shows him in solo, trio and small group settings peforming material from the 1957 Jamaica, 1958’s Flower Drum Song, and a 1949 selection of pieces form South Pacific. He’s got a jivey voice along with swingers Aaron Bell/b, Ray Mosca-Ossie Johnson/dr, Romeo Pinque/fl and Skeeter Best/g for hip cocktail reads of “I Don’t Think I’ll End It All Today” and “Push De Button” that sound like harbingers of Dave Frishberg. His trio with Bell and G. Hogan/perc gives hints of vintage Nat Cole on “Grant Avenue” and “Sunday.” His solo renditions of pieces like “Younger Than Springtime” and “Happy Talk” evoke images of ladies and gents sipping cocktails around the piano. Upscale and uptown.
