The TEN Tenors: Wish You Were Here

So, the Three Tenors, or Take Six isn’t enough for you? Get a load of this dektet that mixes rich vocal harmonies with solo arias with a clever selection of material. Produced and arranged by Steven Baker, the Tenors put themselves in big brass and glorious string productions, also showing an ability to swing. There are some real intriguing arrangements here, starting with a take of Pink Floyd’s “Wish You Were Here” as well as a rock stadium delivery of Queen’s “We Are The Champions.” While I’ve never understood the allure of John Lennon’s lyrics for “Imagine” (“nothing to live or die for”?!?), the mood is well served, as is the almost liturgical take of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.” Rich romance is produced on Prince’s “Nothing Compares 2U” with a dramatic closing with the intriguing and daring choice of David Bowie’s collaboration with Brian Eno for a riveting “Heroes.” No mindless nostalgia or schmaltz here; these guys make some serious art.
