Don Gibson: The Best of the Hickory Records Years (1970-1978)

If you ask people in the know, Don Gibson is one of the true prototypes of post WWII country and western music. He had a ton of hits in the 50s and 60s, with a gorgeously rich voice and relaxed style of delivery.

This collection features his famous return in 1970 after he took some time off to recover from alcoholism. His voice is still wondrous, and he sounds vibrant and fresh on this collection of tunes from his albums on Hickory Records. His tribute to Hank Williams is spot on during “(I Heard That) Lonesome Whistle” while sounding poetic on Joe South’s “Games People Play.” He is a great honky tonker, as he has fun on “Don’t Take All Your Loving” and delivers a Nashville romance on his big hit “Woman (Sensuous Woman” while being laid back and relaxed on another top tenner “One Day At A Time.” Tis is an underappreciated era of h is important career, and deserves some checking out, particularly in this era of Western posers that have never rode a horse or dug a ditch.
