BRAGGIN’ IN BRASS…Craig Fraedrich: Out of the Blues

Craig Fraedrich plays trumpet and flugelhorn, and he doesn’t like to do it alone. He’s created the Jazz Trumpet Ensemble, which includes Mark Wood, Ken McGee, Graham Breedlove and Kenny Rittenhouse on the horns along with Tony Nalker/p, Jim Roberts/g, Steve Fidyk/dr and Regan Brough/b.  In what could have been a self indulgence of Kentonian proportions, Fraderich and company keep it tasty, creating warm shades for Waker’s piano on”Shades of Blue” or giving a dash of Miles Davis on s nifty Bunsen burner of “A Minor Matter.” A take of “Giant Steps” mixes mutings with muscle, and a dash of brassy gospel makes for a Latinized “Sometimes I Feel Like A  Motherless Child.” The team flexes the valves on a charging “I’ll See You On A B-Flat Blues!” and gives a hint of Quisenberry on the sidewinder boogaloo of “BugaBlue.” This is a fun one!
