Michael Waldrop leads from behind the drumset and vibes as he produces a muscular big band album of fresh material. The charts are all well crafted and quite varied. The team creates a caravan with Brad Dutz’s tablas on the grooving “Through the Mist” while the brass is upbeat on “Ivana.” Some Coltranesque tenor work is provided by Chris McGuire on the charging “Sheath and Sword” and Scott Whitfield’s trombone and Briano Monroney’s guitar wrestle with the leader on the driving “Doppler Effect.” Waldrops vibes create a lush atmosphere for a dreamy still life, and the tam shows some more soft sounds on the ethereal “Mouzon.” Sophisticated sounds
