Japan-born pianist Yuko Mabuchi leads a deftly swinging trio of Del Atkins/b and Bobby Breton/dr through a mix of American standards and Asian themes. Her touch and delivery is reminiscent of Oscar Peterson, always with a pulse for optimism, with strong hands on the Latin feel of “ What is This Thing Called Love” and richly rippled resplendence of “All The Things You Are/Take the ’A’ Train/Satin Doll.” She displays classical clearness on “ Valse Noire” and with Atkins’ bass, flexes her muscles on the bold “St. Thomas.” Most intuguin is her own “Sona’s Song” which has a soft touch with an easy sway, as well as the delicate and flowery “Japanese Medley” which is as reflective as a seat under the Bodhi Tree. Nice opening foray.
