Pianist Phil DeGreg brings together Aaron Jacobs/b and John Taylor/dr some creative interpretations of standards mixed in with some originals. Of the latter, he creates rich shadows with Taylor’s high hat on “ Queen City Blues,” races to the finish line on the soulful “Westside Getaway” and rumbles with a chime on “Fountain on a Square.” He has fun with an R&B-ish read of “Cherokee” and gets funky on “My Romance” while adding extra bop to “Embraceable You.”
He likes rich solo introductions, getting evocative for “All the Things You Are
and reflective before leaning into “I’ve Got a Crush On You.” Well thought out and delivered.
