Giancarlo Mazzu, Luciano Troja & Francesco Branciamore: Broad-Ways

The Italian trio of Giancarlo Mazzu/g, Luciano Troja/p and Francesco Branciamore/dr give homage to the Great American Songbook with postmodern jazz mentalities. Pieces by Berlin, Porter and Kern are highlighted here, with clever re-interpretations. Dot’s of notes form a dainty read of “Puttin’ On The Ritz” while Mazzu’s guitar produces a clever tremolo on “Begin the Beguine” and strolls on a laconic “Change Partners.’ Mazzu and Branciamore create a Morse Code message on “Something (sic) Gotta Give” while going a bit Chet Atkinsy on “A Fine Romance.” Troja is in strong form on “Let’s Face the Music and Dance” and gets elliptical with the trio on “Cheek to Cheek” while fugueing with Mazzu on “All of You.” Rich interplay and creative conversations.
