Texas-based vocalist Carolyn Lee Jones does some clever work on a collection of songs from the 70s on this intriguing release. She has a warm and clear tone, huskier but akin to Anita O’Day in terms of swing, and uses it well with a flexible team that delivers upbeat pop with a groove on the gladly-remembered “98.6” as well as the title track. She shows an ability to get exotic with some bluesy drum and tympani on “Tainted Love” and is Caribbean clear on a vibrant read of “Moondance.” Her voice gets wispy as well as dramatic on a desultory “Piano in the Dark” and husky with optimism on the ringer “Like to Get to Know You.” 70s sounds without the polyester!
