Stories from the Old Testament dominate this intriguing post-bop collection by Uri Gurvich, who plays alto and soprano sax as he leads a team of Leo Genovese/p, Peter Slavov/b and Francisco Mela/dr. His soprano delivers a modal Coltrane-ish read in a ¾ groove of the spiritual “Go Down Moses” while he flows with Genovese on “Hermeto.” On alto, he displays a warm tone on the flowing “Song for Kate” and is sleek and sensuous along with Mela’s drumming on the nimble “Dance of the Nanigos.” His vibrato pulsates on the melancholy “Kinship” and gets grooving on “Blue Nomad.” Bernardo Palombo adds spoken voice as Genovese trickles on the folksy “El Chubut” while the team gets dark and shadowy on “Twelve Tribes.” Mediterranean joys.
