Patrick Arthur, Dana Fitzsimons & Chris Otts: The Cheap 3nsemble

The Cheap Ensemble (hence the tricky title) trio of Patrick Arthur/g, Dana Fitzsimons/dr and tenor saxist Chris Otts team up for an album dominated by subtlety and quietude. Arthur has a delicate touch on his guitar, drinking deeply from the waters of Jim Hall, using space with Fitzsimons’ cymbals on “Ithaca” while Otts’ warm tenor adds texture to “Poor Butterfly.” The team is dreamy and lyrical on pieces such as the dainty “Vokslied” and the tensile “Pure Imagination” with Otts’ long tones creating a rhythmic tension. The team gets into an easy rock groove on “Front” and truly aggressive on the harsh “Matrix” while Arthur is harplike on his strings during the celestial “Fortunate Son.” Space is a sound here.
