Tenor saxist carries a palpably rich and agonizing sound to his tenor, teaming up with Shai Maestro/p, Petros Klampanis/b and Ziv Ravitz/dr for a handful of thoughtful and dramatic originals. Except for the rousing and cathartic middle to end of the wild roller coaster of “Single Mother,” most of the material is reflective and contemplative. Even “Single Mother”’s intro is soft and reflective, while the team sounds longing and spacious throughout the entire “The Whale Song” with Maestro creating long shadows on the dreamy “Lonnie’s Lament.” Klampanis and Ravitz create an exotic swing with some spicy picking and cymbal work on “The Three Statements of Garab Dorje” and the whole team does some rich work with dynamics as they canter on “Welcome.” Rich and rewarding.
