Pianist Key Akagi has carved out an impressive career as a sideman for the likes of Miles Davis and Stanley Turrentine. I’ve seen him in both settings, and have been impressed by his chops and lyricism. Here, he leads a trio of Shunya Wakai and Tamaya Honda/dr through ten originals that display sophistication and swing.
His own pieces like “In the Fold” and “Where You May Be” display a mix of clever and strong structures with a sense of surprise and style. He’s nimble with Honda on the Brazilian dance “Playground” while does some kinetic interplay with the team on “Simply Five.” A Three Part “Contrast and Form” allow Akagi to do some solo aria work, with a rich solo intro segueing into the team groove on “Part III” while dreaming in meditation on “Part I.” Impressive impressions.
