Arranger, trumpeter and conductor John Vanore brings together a rich big band to “re-imagine” the classic works of saxist, arranger and composer Oliver Nelson, who is best known for his music on TV shows like Ironside and Night Gallery as well as his classic Blues and the Abstract Truth album.
Steve Wilson is featured with his alto sax on the swinging “Reuben’s Rondo” and brassily hip “Self Help is Neede” while his soprano works well on the gospel tinged “I Hope in Time a Change Will Come.” The percussive “El Gato” teams Wilson with Bob Mallach/ts and Greg Kettinger’s guitar while the sectons get punch on “Blues & The Abstract Truth” and a swaying “St. Louis Blues” with Don Ballou’s trumpet. Tributes are always a dicey play, as one must ask, “Why not just go to the original source?” but this one works well on its own.
